THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING AN EVAPORATIVE COOLER

Evaporative coolers are a good solution for beating the heat when mercury levels go high during summer. Also known as swamp coolers, evaporative coolers are easy to maintain, less expensive, more economic, and more environmentally friendly alternatives to air cooling at home. They combine the natural cooling properties of room temperature water with a readily available steady breeze to lower indoor temperatures in your house.

But how do we, the normal people, know which evaporative cooler should we buy? More importantly, when buying an evaporative cooler, what are the factors that it must have? Take a look at the list below for some common help guidelines.

1. Ask yourself if you really need an evaporative cooler

The temperature in a room drops because as dry air passes over water, the dry air absorbs some of the water. Consequently, few water molecules turn into gas molecules, and heat switches to the lower temperature. As all of this happens, the area around the circulation zone is automatically cooled. This means that air coolers are most effective during the summer when humidity is low. You should get an evaporative cooler if these situations govern your home.

2. Knowing where you want to place it

There are tons of evaporative coolers out there in the market and you have to choose a model based on where you want to place it. For instance, if you wish to move the cooler from one room to another, you should get a portable cooler. On the other hand, if you want to fix your cooler on your window, a desert cooler or duct coolers are your best option because they are designed for easy fitting to a window.

3. Deciding on the size

Depending on how large the cooling area actually is, you need to determine the size of the evaporative cooler that you will be buying. This is generally measured in how many cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) the entire unit can pump in the room. The easiest way of doing this is by using a simple calculation:

Room size (square feet) X ceiling height (feet) / 2 = CFM generated by the cooler

4. Deciding on a filter

In an evaporative cooler, the filter also collects dust particles, debris, and airborne dust. There are usually two major types of pads that are used in evaporative filters. The first is made up of wood wool and the second is a rigid media pad called a honeycomb pad. Rigid media pads are expensive but require less maintenance and can last up to years. Fiber pads are inexpensive but require more maintenance and frequent replacement.

5. How much maintenance it needs?

Most evaporative coolers are fairly low maintenance and need cleaning once a month. However, you should always look at the manuals and ask for directions on how often you need to clean them. It is advised to not buy a cooler that requires professional cleanup frequently.
