5 SIMPLE TIPS TO COOL A ROOM AND MAINTAIN IT!

The common topic of discussion nowadays and which has become spontaneous and everyday small talk for most of us is being unable to think of life without an AC in summer. But come to think of it, our country has a mammoth 300 million households with AC to be cooled off during scorching heat or sultry weather. Huge as the numbers sound to be, this is just about 5% of the total population of our beautiful country.

As we ponder on these numbers, the questions do arise as to how 95% of people survive without AC or how people lived without AC in ancient times!! There are countless ways to feel cool and comfortable, ways and means to keep yourself and your surroundings cool, without the electricity bills shooting north. Yes, there are ways, and we are going to speak about the five of them here for your benefit;

COVER WINDOWS IN THE DAYTIME

Keeping the curtains drawn over the closed windows during the day is not to secure privacy from peeping and prying eyes, but is a sure-shot way of lowering the room temperature as significantly as about 15-20 degrees (Fahrenheit).

Using Venetian blinds or light-colored blinds ensures to bring in adequate light to the room during the day, and at the same time keeps the room cool. The blinds can be opened once the heat goes down at sunset or during the night. As an extreme, cardboard can be placed on the windows to wear away the heat through the room and at the same time give a look much like a cave. As windows are the most significant sources of excess and unwanted heat, covering them during the peak hours of mid-day is the first step to getting cooler.

LIMIT HOT APPLIANCES

All the appliances that we use daily for our modern-day conveniences like an oven, a dishwasher, washing machines, and a dryer are the ones that radiate mild to considerable heat and therefore are significant contributors to heat generation. While the washer vigorously cycles hot water, the spin cycle of the dryers produces a lot of heat, the same goes for the dishwasher. Since cleaning both your clothes and dishes are integral, at least we can avoid using them in the hottest part of the day and can take up these activities at night. This can help us mitigate the temperature during peak times.

In the context of one who is gastronomically inclined, by developing a taste for grilled food, which is both healthy and deliciously succulent, the use of ovens and stove tops will come down by a considerable extent, lowering the heat generation in proportion. A better and more effective way is to switch on the fan while the stove is in operation, as it will improve the distribution of air, even if it does not cool things down.

CREATE A CROSS BREEZE

Cross ventilation as we commonly term it, is one of the coolest methods that we can apply to the acoustics of our home. This is also the effect of the wind which forcibly pulls cool air from outside through a vent or most commonly a window, while the hot air is exited to the exterior.

In rooms, we can amplify the convection process and we can strategically work on putting box fans/air coolers at the door and the window where one can pull in cold air and can pass off the hot air outside from the other window. This can be managed in a room with a single window, but it is much more effective and easier in a room with two windows. Simply opening a window lower in height on one side of the house which is not so heated up and another one at a higher end on the hotter part of the house, with all the doors open through both ends, creates an intensified cross breeze.

SWITCH TO CFL OR LED BULBS

Switching to energy-efficient light bulbs such as CFL or LED is a prudent way of saving oneself from excess heat which is produced by ordinary and traditional lights. These also have the twin advantage of substantially cutting down on electricity bills. LEDs are the best as they engage the electrical energy in producing more light than heat, with CFL coming second, but significantly better in controlling and mitigating the heat of the other electric bulbs.

As both CFL and LED consume much less energy compared to incandescent lighting, these are more meaningful to curb excess generation of heat. Thus, the next time you switch on a light, remember to switch over to LED or CFL!

INSTALL AN AIR COOLER

While there are several other effective methods of making yourself cool and comfortable in the summers namely; taking cold showers, hanging wet sheets on the window, and using the exhaust fans more often to the skipping hot meals, one of the prime and foremost remedies to negotiate and even beat the heat is to invest in buying and installing an Air Cooler, which ideally should be a portable one.

If it is a dry climate, it is all the more suitable as Air Coolers work best in arid weather, and being portable, an evaporative Air cooler keeps you comfortable during the day in the living room, and during the night in your bedroom.

Reasons to choose an Air Cooler are very many, and the predominant ones are:

  • They are more economical and significantly cheaper than Air Conditioners.
  • An Air Cooler guarantees substantial cooling while ensuring a continuous flow of fresh air in the environment, due to the evaporative mechanism
  • Most of the maintenance and servicing can be done at home, sparing the botheration of always depending on an on-call mechanic
  • Easy on the pocket pinch as the power consumption is less and thus the electricity bills do not shoot up northwards, even on sustained high usage.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF AN AIR COOLER:

An Air Cooler works on the technique of relative humidity and evaporative procedure, it pulls in fresh air from outside and mixes it with water droplets, which transforms the hot air into the cold air and this cool air is then blown outside to cool your target area. The distinct advantages of air coolers are:

  • It is always fresh air that we breathe and not recycled stale air, keeping our lungs safe and non-toxic.
  • There is no emission of CFC or any greenhouse gas, thus keeping the air and the environment eco friendly
  • The air that is thrown out is not dry but has a certain percentage of humidity blended, which helps the skin to be moisturized, more so in dry climates.

The notable key features to consider while installing an evaporative Air Cooler at your home are:

  • The place where it will be most used; indoors or outdoors
  • Channelized water distribution enhances the effect of cooling in a given space or area.
  • Fan speed regulator which helps you to switch to your comfortable modes anytime.
  • Air swing helps to spread the air to a wider area thus maximizing the effect of an air cooler and thus covering a larger space.
  • Float ball connection for continuous water supply, which safeguards the water tank from getting exhausted and helps to restore water in the tank for uninterrupted usage.
